Welcome to the 3rd Unit of Inquiry - Where we are in place and time.
Central Idea: Archeological excavations help us understand the past and the present.
Lines of Inquiry:
Lines of Inquiry:
- Process of excavations
- Fossils help us learn about the past.
- The interconnectedness of the past and present.
- Change
- Causation
- Research skills
- Thinking skills
UOI - Welcome to the 3rd unit of inquiry. This unit is going to be an exciting one as students will enquire about the world of archaeology and find out about an ancient civilisation. The students will be begin to learn about the process of excavations and model a sample excavation site for their summative task. This will showcase their mathematical, planning and analysing skills. As you can read below, there will be links made to other learning areas to extend learning in literacy and mathematics.
Language Arts: English - As usual, students will continue building upon their vocabulary with the weekly spelling list. This unit of inquiry has a large focus on research skills as they will need to find information from a range of sources (not just the internet!). With this in mind, students will work on finding out, sourcing out and summarising information in their own words. Students will learn how to write information reports about archeological excavations and their locations.
Reading comprehension skills will continue to be enhanced as they will start to be assessed on deeper thinking skills and learning to ‘read between the lines’. This is important as students learn to think critically about what they are reading and how to respond to a text.
Mathematics - Continuing from the last unit, students will be advancing and practicing their mental computation skills. There has been a large emphasis on this as we realize our students need to be able to use numbers in real life situations without the need of technology all the time. In addition, links to the UOI will be made as students learn how measure different angels and use measurement skills to create their own ‘excavation site’ project.
In the number strand, we would like to see the children be able to use equivalent fractions and decimals more confidently and to use this in real world situations
Visual Art - In visual art class, our students will learn some methods of creatively reusing the recycled materials
through watching videos and teacher’s demonstration. After that, they need to bring some recycled materials from home, such as tissue roll, bottles, egg tray, straws and so on. In final, the student needs to enact new function and possibilities for those recycled materials with his/her own creativity. After that, they will be required to share their own personal growth in realizing and creative ability, and also reflect on the connection between our daily life, creativity and art.
PSPE - The outcomes involved in P.E and PSPE classes include:
- identifying the components of fitness; e.g., strength, endurance, flexibility, cardio- respiratory activities, and relate these to personal fitness level
- Describing and charting individual fitness changes as a result of engaging in physical activity.
- Working in small groups, plan and participate in a fitness circuit using different games to develop endurance, strength and flexibility.
- Keeping a log of their nutritional intake and physical activity and describe change over time.
Chinese - In Chinese UOI and in the language lessons, students will begin to understand the history of the development of Chinese characters and reflect on the significance of the protection of cultural heritage. Students may also be given an opportunity to enquire about the terracotta warriors and the 'oracle bone script.'
Music - Students will inquire into the evolution of musical instruments from past to present, its associations through place and time, and how it has influenced composers and their compositions. They will learn to inquire and reflect through a simple research project. They will learn communication, organization, and reflective skills through working individually and in a group.
