UOI - Grade 6 started to look at the unit, sharing the planet. We briefly were able to look at the central idea and came up with a set of class essential agreements when it comes to combining classes with Huijia exchange students. English - Students did a reading comprehension text on a cautionary tale and attempt to write their own stories using figurative language. For BtN, students learnt about earth hour. Each child made a concept map about electricity. Math - Students continued to look at word problems about figures and statistics in a pie and lie chart. Modified activities were provided for ESL students and others who need extra support in division, fractions and percentages. Chinese - P6 students have learned the text <我的老实> 1 Master new vocabulary, 2 grammar exercises. 3 How to describe a person's appearance and character Writing : Practice a written article, including character appearance description, language description, action description, etc Here is a look at what we will cover next week: UOI - Grade 6 will start to brainstorm and implement behaviour management strategies for other primary classrooms. They will work in groups to come up with different ideas to help their younger peers deal with conflicting situations. English - Students will start to draft and publish their own stories just like the cautionary tale. For BtN, students will do an inquiry on the world happiness survey. A follow up comprehension activity will follow and an opportunity to ask a reporter about this interesting topic. Math - Students will begin looking at angles and will use different problem solving methods in mathematics to figure out solutions. Modified activities will be provided for ESL students and others who need extra support in division, fractions and percentages.

UOI - Grade 6 presented what they did to take action for a NGO. This was presented over the week. We will also started our next unit on sharing the planet. The children worked with our visiting Huijia students about ways to manage peace in the classroom. English - Students did a reading comprehension text on identifying different elements of a show review. For BtN, students did an inquiry on the famine in South Sudan. A follow up comprehension activity followed and an opportunity to ask a reporter about this issue. Math - Students continued to look at word problems about figures and statistics in a pie and lie chart. Modified activities were provided for ESL students and others who need extra support in division, fractions and percentages. Chinese - Students have learned the text <我的老实>. 1. UOI - During the UOI assembly, students presented a musical dance item prepared in Music class to show their understanding of systems and the need for organisations. They also spent time reflecting on their UOI. English - In spelling. students looked at prefixes and the roots for prefixes such as auto fore and circum. This week, BtN focussed on women's rights. Students inquired about influential women in this world and asked a reporter about gender equality. Math - Students worked on enhancing their problem solving skills in reading data on pie charts and graphs. UOI - Students used this week to learn about lesson planning and to plan their presentations for Teachers Day. We also briefly discussed our Summative Tasks and most students should be finished by next week. English -In Reading comprehension, the students learnt about Sadako and the atomic bomb that hit Hiroshima. This week, BtN had focus on palm oil. Students found out about its effects and created e-posters to express their learning. Math - Further practice was implemented to work on ratio word problems. There was an in class assessment on ratio word problems. To cater for the ESL learners, there were questions that will be deconstructed visually to help them systematically work through a word problem. Chinese - Learn the text 《蒙娜丽莎之约》,feel the painting's artistic charm. 2、Focus is according to illustrations, studying specific description of the portrait. 3、Guide students to appreciate the elegant demeanor and the beauty of Mona Lisa. 4、Students will exchange the knowledge and understanding of the world famous paintings. 5、They will make data collection and organize, held "World Masterpiece appreciation" in the class.6Writing practice :composition <我喜欢的一件艺术品>。 6 , Chinese poem <qing ming>. Here is a look at what we will cover next week: UOI - Students should be ready to present their reports on taking action to support an organisation. Students will reflect on their actions to finish up this unit of inquiry. During the UOI assembly, students will present a musical dance item prepared in Music class to show their understanding of systems and the need for organisations. English - In writing, students will enhance their expository writing skills by editing published work and by adding depth to their arguments and examples. Next week, BtN will have a focus on women's rights. Students will inquire about the importance of fairness between genders and get to ask questions to a news reporter about this issue. Math - Next week, students will get to work on enhancing their problem solving skills in reading data on pie charts and graphs. Word problems will still play a major part in their thinking and problem solving skills. Chinese - 1,Learn text《cong cong》, and find out the profound meaning of the sentences and understand the irreversibility of time. 2,Focus is on learning how to describe the time flying feet by a metaphor and anthropomorphic approach. 3, Students will recite poems about the time. 4,They will contact real life to discuss their experiences and feelings, and then do related writing. 5 Chinese poem <zaochun>. Special Announcements: Next Thursday, we will have a grade 4 class visit from Jakarta, Indonesia and both of our grade 5/6 will spend some time sharing about their culture and what we have been learning in our UOI. We will ask the students to dress up in their native costume for Thursday, but please ensure they bring their normal school uniform as usual. UOI - Students are working towards finishing their summative task reports (Taking action to support a local organisation). English - In spelling, students are working on identifying and using contractions that are commonly misused. In 'Behind the News (BtN)' lessons, the students found out about beached whales and did a research report on a type of whale. Math - We are starting to compliment our math program with Singapore based word problems. Last week, students worked on word problems in Algebra and this week, we moved to working on word problems on ratios. Special Announcements: Next Friday, the school will have a Teacher's Appreciation Day which means we will finish at 12pm. We will not follow scheduled lessons as per usual, but it will be a day where the students teach the teachers (Mr Tan and Ms Chen Qing) and their class mates some new skills. Next week, students will be encouraged to prepare a mini lesson to teach us something that they are passionate about - it could be drawing, dance, origami making, rapping, making a video, etc. We will also have a class party so students are encouraged to bring in food and/or drink.
